Oil Gauge

I am looking at buying a 2000 S, and one issue is the oil level gauge does not function.

Is this common, and is it a sensor I can replace?

Thanks in Advance - Joe

I've never heard of that before. Instead of a oil level gauge what does it show? Is the light out?
