Yesterday, my Porsche Boxster's key for became inoperable with the red LED remaining ON. I immediately removed the battery so that the battery would not die. After reviewing several web sites, I found that by waiting an unspecified amount of time and re-installing the battery correctly, the Porsche key would work. This is a sign that the digital circuitry inside the key had "latched up" into an undefined state. Removing the battery, pushing the lock/unlock button and shorting the battery holder while the battery was out discharged the digital circuitry and, once the battery was reinserted, the key fob worked. This has happened before and I think it is a common problem.
