Help reprograming a gauge cluster

Hello all,

I'm hoping for a little help here. When I got my boxster, I did the OBC upgrade with the 4th stalk, but I always wanted the dot matrix display. Well, last week I got one off of ebay and temporarily connected it to my car to confirm it works with the upgraded stalk and it does. But, before I install it into my car permanently, I'd like to copy the VIN and milage from my current gauge cluster to the dot matrix one. I bought a universal (cheap-o) eprom reader/programer, but it doesn't support the ST chip in the newer clusters. Is there anyone out there in the SF bay area that can help me reprogram my cluster, or is there anyone out there that is willing to lend me a
Willem
GQ‐4X
eeprom programer? I don't want to buy one for this one project.

Thanks for your help.

Tony

I sold a Willem
GQ‐4X to another board member after I finished my reprogramming project. I think it has changed hands a few times and it may still be with someone on the Board or on Renntech. You may have some luck if you post a want to buy thread in the parts for sale section here or the classifieds on Renntech.

Does Fry's sell them?
You could always buy one and when it does not do everything you expected it to, return it

Which programmer did you try? There are some in the $20-$30 range that should work.

I bought a cheapo one off ebay. EZP2010. It just didn't support all the way up to the ST 93c86 chip that is in the 01-04 clusters.

That's the same one I have. Hopefully it will do the older 93c56's on the old clusters (haven't tried it yet).

I thought mikesz had the Willem last...you might check with him.

The software says it supports it, but I don't have that cluster. Good luck.

Well, I ended up buying a Willem
GQ‐4X programmer. I was able to reprogram the new dot matrix cluster with my car's original VIN and millage with no problem after that. Now I have a cluster and a programmer to sell. What do you think the market is for this type of cluster on this forum?

Nope I don't have it. I did buy one but couldn't get it to work. My gauges are now in the hands of QUMLUS in CO. the cluster I want to use are out of a C4, They faces are a gray/silver and glow red numerals. Should look awesome once installed.

amagalla: I may be interested in that programmer if I can use it on a 996 cluster retrofit into my 986.

It depends on the model of the gauge. As it turns out, I'm able to return it, so I've done that.

Thanks.
