Waterpump Replacement
Hi All,
I need to replace my water pump, on an 03 Boxster - does anyone know if you have to disconnect the lower hose and drain the coolant?

I have a 99 and yes I disconnected the lower hose to drain the system. I bought a 5 gallon storage bin to drain the coolant into and went to my local recycling station. I removed the front engine mount and replaced the bushing and also replaced the thermostat and added new coolant. There are several DIY. I referred to Pedro's and the Pelican book. it was actually easy to do.

I have also replaced my own water pump with the aid of the Pedro Porsche and Pelican parts technical guidelines. I would recommend marking the position of the bolts as you remove them from the pump since they are different lengths. I pushed mine in a piece of cardboard that I used as a template.

I did the same thing too. It turns out that the two holes in the water pump that have the dowels to help align the pump are the ones that get the longer bolts in case you forget to mark them.

Make sure you get an oem metal gasket. I made that mistake and used the paper gasket and had to take it off and reinstall the metal gasket.

That was perfect timing. I also have to change the pump out. Thanks for the tips - Anyone suggest a good parts supplier that ships to Canada?
Thinking I will do the Tension-er also as it has a minor amount of play in it.

Used them for motor mount and it came out slightly cheaper than using ECS, Amazon, or Pelican. The shipping and exchange rate comes into play...

I see autopartsway.ca is only showing the metal impeller model right now though.

It won't drain a whole 5 gallons if you don't remove the thermostat, but will drain more than 1 gallon, so if you use a drain pan, do expect to use a deep one. It helps if you jack up the back right of the car to prevent a whole ton of coolant from draining out. Also, the innermost 10mm bolt for the pump is much easier to remove with a short 10mm swivel socket (or a 10mm short socket and a u-joint.) Take care and twist the hose off the pump's port, because you dont want to twist on that rubber T-joint in the hose.

when I drained my coolant I bought a 5 gallon storage container from Wal-Mart and used that to drain the coolant then took it to the recycling station to dispose of.

What do you need an old pump for?
Also, coolant does need to be periodically changed, so this is the best time to do so. I was able to drain about 75-85% of the coolant from mine and added fresh.

Shacky; The metal gasket is installed dry, no sealant. Just make sure the sealing surface is good and clean.
Ben006; I have my water pump that is in good condition, no failure of bearing or impeller, if you want to pay shipping and work something out on next batch of shifters!!
