It won't drain a whole 5 gallons if you don't remove the thermostat, but will drain more than 1 gallon, so if you use a drain pan, do expect to use a deep one. It helps if you jack up the back right of the car to prevent a whole ton of coolant from draining out. Also, the innermost 10mm bolt for the pump is much easier to remove with a short 10mm swivel socket (or a 10mm short socket and a u-joint.) Take care and twist the hose off the pump's port, because you dont want to twist on that rubber T-joint in the hose.
