986 soft top replacement

So my '97 986 top is garbage and I've already purchased a replacement. I've looked around the web and youtube for video instructions on replacing the soft top, but it seems like everyone goes for the option to just replace the entire top, mechanics and all. I have never done a replacement for a top and was wondering if anyone has done this and if so do you have any good tips for what i should look out for. It seems pretty straight forward and my father-in-law who works on cars for a living is planning on helping me, but he has only done one convertible top in the past, and it was some time ago.

any pointers are appreciated.
