This is a really nice write-up! I will be using it at some point not too distant. Thanks for putting this together.

Hi Randall. you are more then welcome to do so.
I also posted similar DIY for heater core removal/replacement, and AC evaporator replacement.
Thank you for to warm words Kenny.

Excellent write up thank you!

@Meir,

Those instructions are a work of art! Little arrows and all. That must have taken some time! Even pics of the tools used. Looked better than a Pelican writeup.

Hope I never have to be up to my arse in dash! I only thought I wanted to paint that little-bitty trim piece running through the dash. After seeing how much work it is….I'll pass on the dash! If I ever have to, at least I will know how! Good writeup.

Not sure about the other link. Might try another file sharing site…or just post them here! Cannot have too many DIYs! You learn SOMETHING from everyone….even if it only to stay away! Present company excluded, of course!

Hi Mark.
Thanks man.
BTW I'm not sure you need to remove the dashboard, in order to get the stripes out.
They are held by screws from behind, and I think you can get to it by only removing the air tunnels. I'm n the road now, I'll check it and give you a call when I'm back home.

@Christian,

Thanks for the info….I KNEW I had seen this procedure! I wanted to match the places where you had the color….uh, except in silver! I have never seen green look so good! I think it just adds a "newer" look to the car, NICE!

Thank Meir….got it covered. Whew! Dodged a bullet on that dash removal thing. Yea!

Pm me your email address, and I will email you the off file.
I can open the link from both my computer and cell phone, so I'm not sure what is the problem.
Need to find a better way then Dropbox to store the file.

Chuck W. 03-06-2015 06:04 AM

It worked for me. GREAT writeup. Thanks.

Meir 03-06-2015 06:13 AM

Ok.
I have a feeling you need to have a Dropbox app installed on your computer or phone, in order to download it.
I will try to post another link later for Google docs.

Think I just found my project for the weekend. Dash is going to get wrapped in suede.

YellowBoxster2.7 10-11-2015 02:35 PM

Thank You Meir for the write up on removing the heater core, mine is totally corroded. Fairly easy to do with the photos. Thanks again

What suede do you use ?

Mine keeps fading...

Can anyone comment on how long this procedure takes? I need to get my dash recovered and the recommended upholstery shop will not work on it in the car. They will do it if I bring it to them.

Also, does everything need to be removed? Thanks in advance.

removing the dashboard cover only, should take about 2 to 4 hours, depend on your skills.
not sure if i understand what you mean by "does everything need to be removed?"

I did some searching and it appears that to remove the dashboard (so I can get the leather replaced), I will need to remove everything including the speedo, stereo, air bags, steering wheel, etc.

So 2 - 4 hours to remove and then another 2 - 4 hours to put back?

Thanks for this fantastic writeup!

John

yes. that's about it.
the whole project took me about 12 hours net, but that includes the heater core removal and the ac air box/evaporator replacement.
also taking pictures and figuring out what to do took some time.

Thank you for your excellent posts regarding dash and heater / evaporator box removal. They came in handy when removing my heater box to fix flaps with missing foam and updating to a dash with a glove box on my 1999 996.
