Thumbs down 2002 Boxster radio, CD changer and nav system damaged

Although the manual specifically says a discharged battery may be jump started and provides specific directions how to do that, the dealer says that a jump start caused a short in the whole radio, CD and nav system and the only remedy is a $3,000 replacement.

I've since read that someone else had a similar event.

A number of firms offer to repair factory installed systems such as this. In fact one referred me to Becker that could have built the radios for 2002 Boxsters. Becker's website indicates they will repair radios for 2002 Boxsters. Then I was told that the system with a navigation unit was built not by Becker but by Siemens, Bosch, or maybe VDO?

Does anyone know which one it might be?

Would they repair or sell a refurbished system for the 2002 Boxster?

What about others who repair or sell refurbished factory installed systems?

Any thoughts why such an expensive system is not properly fused? Is this a design defect? Especially when I saw another instance on a website when a Boxster owner had reported a similar event?

Thoughts?
