2001 Boxster roller

2001 Boxster in Orient Red with Gray interior. Just turned 68,000 miles.

Driving to Okteenerfest (914 event in NC) this past weekend the engine shut off. Heard a rattle just before it died. No idea why died.....assume IMS but could be one of the documented 31 failure modes. I have not tried to restart nor have I done any diagnostics.

I am the second owner. Before my purchase in 2016 car was a regional PCA show winner. Car has never been wrecked, original paint, everything works perfectly (except engine...of course ), no burned out pixels, top is good, and interior is great with only minor scuffing on drivers seat bolster.

Car is at my farm in Albemarle, NC. I have a clear SC title in my name.

Bill, I doubt it's the case with yours, but did you check the belt? I just remembered Big Jake's old thread from when he thought his IMS went and it turned out to be the a bad pulley and belt: http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/56984-bigjakes-ims-dilemma.html

I have not checked for that. But, a broken belt wouldn't have shut down the engine, would it? I would think it would illuminate the alternator light and the temperature gauge would start climbing?

Correct, it would usually not cause the engine to stop immediately and there are lots of more likely causes. Still, it just takes about 10 minutes and a 10 mm wrench to be sure.

Mine did, when I lost the tensioner pulley and the belt wound it's way around the crank pulley. It was a mess, and stopped my engine dead in a matter of moments. Fortunately I was at a stop light when it happened.

I've decided to keep the car and change the engine. Already sourced one.
