convincing stepmom to get a 911

Well, she has an '03 sl500. (actually it's my dads but she essentially stole it. note to self: never get married) Anyways,

It has had many problems and every day I remind her how much of a superior car a 911 is and for a smaller price tag also.

She used to ignore me, but she keeps telling me how it is starting to sink into her mind that the 911 is superior.

She always tells me how much she loves my car and loves being in it and the engine sound.

Talked to her today and she told me how she was disgusted w/ the new SL design

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/coupes/preview-2009-mercedes-benz-sl-facelift/

and that she will not be getting another one. I, of course, by duty, mentioned to her that I see SLs more than I see civics around here and especially in Long Island. She was even more disgusted.

I followed that up by telling her that the 911 also has back seats and can be had in AWD, so she can drive it all year, and it'd still cost less than the SL.

This amazed her, and she told me we would go drive one. I told her that it'd be hard to find one in an automatic, but we could do it.

She was pleased.

Then I mentioned how the auto would cost 3500 MORE and it would greatly depreciate the car's value come trade-in. She agreed I could teach her to drive a stick.

I proceeded to ask that since I was so helpful, maybe she could buy me one also, and she hung up on me, because she knew I was being serious

So Friday I will be doing this w/ her and will report back w/ results.

Think I can get the dealer to let just her and I drive and he can sit back at the dealerhouse and wait?

Long ass thread, sorry.

in Aug Car and Driver did a big old convertible type car round up
Merc, Jag XK, 911 Cab, Cadillac whatever and BMW 645.

They said the power in the 911 was nothing special and never
thought they would ever put a 911 in this category, 2nd heaviest of the lot.
But it was the only sports car of the group.

For a big heavy luxury car I'm kinda liking those high end Jaguars with the sporty wheels...makes me think of an Aston Martin.

The 911 is certainly not a comparble car to the SL. My guess is she will be sorely unhappy with the 911 after a few months IF she really likes a two seat tourer, which is what the SL and Jag are.

The 911 is tight and not all that comfy. It also has no storage room and what it does have, bites.

Nice second car though!

911 cab does not weigh more than any of those cars, man.

The sl500 weighs over 4k lbs and has 302hp and 339 tq.

Jaguar XK has 300hp in a 3600 lb package.

XKR has 320hp in a 3900lb (is that correct?) package.

And the 645i, which doesn't exist any longer, is 325hp in a 4000 lb package.

911 cab is 3130 lbs w/ 325hp and 273 tq . Far better than any of those.

She told me what she wants. Just like heated seats, cd changer, maybe nav, and A/C...that's really it.

She actually prefers the full leather interior of my car to her car. Thinks it's much higher quality.

Besides, none of those are AWD

I think she will be happy guys, and of course, I will as well.

911 is missing a bit of torque, though, but certainly is still drivable.

Not sure if she needs the car to be 'new' or not, but there are some really low mile 2005 997's available at good prices. Came across a couple of 997 'S' with lots of options and low miles in the high 60's (plus 355hp ).

That will probably be my next move (at least a year out though).

Amen! Sadly it is something you may have to do several times to get it right! However, it is not important to be perfect, just to be happy, ultimately.

My advice is to not convince anyone to buy anything, particularly a car. Everytime I've been at all involved with someone making a purchase decision when something goes wrong they expect me to be able to know how to fix it or blame me for "talking them into it" in the first place. Let her make up her own mind. The first thing I tell anyone now is basically "for me this is what I tbink and I have done but you've got to make up your own mind and live with it."

I push her to get a stick because it will save $$, depreciate slower, and um...I think she knows how to drive one :P

This isn't a grocery getter. It's a week-end car for her or an occasional car. It is essentially my DAD'S car and my dad will be so happy w/ a stick, even though he will probably never drive it.

She even said if she wants to go somewhere like Manhattan, she can take her ML350.

I have to expose her to the car world because she and my dad know CRAP about cars. They know what's hyped, what their FRIENDS tell them about, and that's about it.

My dad told me once that the SL500 was the best roadster in the world...

Then I got my Box....

Yeah, right.

I am going to show her other cars as well, including 650i cab. and Maseratis.

Hopefully she and I can go today or tomorrow.
