Thoughts on K40 Radar Detector

Ive been looking at a K40 system and its gauranteed to keep you from getting tickets for 1 year. If not they will pay the ticket. This has me very intrigued. VERY. Does anyone have this system? I have been a V1 wannabe for a year and was thinking about just going ahead and ordering it. But then I saw a report on the local Kansas city news that there is a radar thing thats still legal in kansas and missouri and they will pay your ticket if you get one. I missed the report so I dont know anyhting about it, and I cant find it on the internet. So I will ask you for advice, Specifically K40 vs V1.

I know that my local car stereo installation owner installs and swears by them. The company will pay for the ticket, but I'd be more worried about the points on my record for insurance, etc.

Personally, I'll be sticking with an outboard model, because of cost and I don't speed too often.

How much is it installed anyway?

I sent a question through the website and got 2 responses so far.

"Hello Jon. Auto Werks is the local distributor & installer for all your auto customizing needs. The K-40 system is fully stealth & has 3 options. Forward facing intergrated, Front & Rear intergrated & Laser Diffuser add-on.
The base unit is Front & Rear w/ display lights in driver forward position in front of speedo gauges. It cost $599.99 for the unit & installation runs $200. We also recommend the laser diffuser which looks like a license plate cover. Your choice of front coverage or rear or both. Each diffuser runs $225, buy two for front & rear cover & get them @ $199 per. If diffusers are purchased @ the same time as main unit labor on install is FREE. Your porsche may need a license plate adaptor (we can get that for you from Aristocrat Motors (local porsche dealer) we work with them a lot). We also are a full customizer w/ wheels, tires, audio video upgrades, navigation, sat radio (XM & Sirius), & go fast parts to make your Porsche stand out & go. Please feel free to e-mail us. Autowerks@kc.rr.com My name is Brian Kearney or BK to everyone. We strive to create a hassle-free experience. We can help with any & all automotive needs, just ask.

Thanks again for your interest in K-40. If any other questions you can contact me @

So Im thinking if I get the detector and a front laser defuser and install it all myself its 800 bucks. A V1 is $400 though....

I like the permanent installation of the K40. I have owned a V1 for years. Radar/laser detectors are just that. None are impermeable to faults. I have avoided many tickets with my V1 and have received my fair share with my Valentine 1. So they pay for any tickets within a year. They still make money from the sale. I would pay double for any tickets to avoid the points on my record. I hate having to remove my V1 each time I take the Box out. For this reason, I am considering a permanent install..Just my two cents..

Have heard good things about the K40, but I've just run V1s for years. There is interesting discussion on the Valentine site somewhere about why Mike didnt design it as a modular system to install in the car, and I've always wished he would put some research into that, as to me its quite clear that a system with sensors at both ends of the car, outside the glass would be superior. The question to me is just does K40 really do it right.

Got another reply today,

"Hi Jon,

I understand that you are interested in a K40 Radar
System for you Porsche 986 Boxster. I'm going to
assume you you interested in the Calibre Bluetooth
system. The are several variables, but a standard
installation on the front & rear radar system is
$1699.00. Most people who by the radar system add the
Laser Defuser laser protection, it runs $318.95. I can
do a package price of $1899.00. There is the option of
a front only radar which is less expensive. The
installed price can also be higher depending on the
chosen location of the L.E.D.s.

Please feel to give me a call at 816-246-1661.

Thanks,

Wayne

Wink Love my K40

Just found this thread and wanted to chime in...

I inherited the K40 front and rear in my car and I love it...nothing to compare it to but it seems to pick up eveything. The only issue I have with the install is that the LEDs are built into the bottom of the storage area just north of the shifter...forces you tp keep your periferal vision keen when the radio level is elevated.

Anyhow, I was on the Garden State Parkway today and was targeted from the back before I could even see the car in the rearview...had to be really far back. The funny thing here is that I was not speeding but was passed by a blur of a minivan and the patrolman never blinked...as he drew closer there was nothing between him and I and I kept getting a blast every minute of so as he was obviously keeping tabs on the drop top with the over sized wheels.

I think I was unfairly profiled...ha ha!

I own the K40 system...front and rear...

It has saved me 12 times...12 times I would have been ticketed...

On the 13th time, the officer Lidared...(lied about successfully getting me on radar). He changed the time of the ticket to read 8am, when he really gave me the ticket at almost 10 pm. I kept asking to see the radar readout, and he finally said: "I'll have all my proof in order by the court date". That is when he adjusted the "time" I received my ticket, which obviously was the time he did get a legitimate "hit" on another car with his radar. When he "testilies" in court, I will have proof from the hotel I stayed at the I did not check out until 8:45 (front desk and keylock timer on my room door prove it). I also have two additional pieces of proof that will show that he changed my "ticket time" by two hours.

The system is worth every single penny, IF YOU DRIVE FAST, OFTEN.

I do so when it is (relatively) safe. No onramps/offramps or other traffic near me when I speed.

I have my "warning" LED's along the edge of my dashboard border...so I can easily see when I get a "hit".

Once, I was warned well over two miles (3 minutes) before I saw the cop.

AMAZING SYSTEM...

Spy4cia - you can simply go back and edit your post rather than creating another entry...
