My 1 cent's:

* I agree that 4-5-6 are too closely spaced. I often skip 5th.

* I think 1-2 are too far apart, especially in stop-and-go traffic.

* I use 6th a LOT. If I had a 7th taller top gear, I would use it, too.

* The top gear in a 5-speed vs a 6-speed is about the same.

* Note that the "lugging" is all relative. A 2.5L with 200HP has to keep the revs up a LOT more than a 3.4L with 295HP.
