I'd be interested in hearing from members as to how long their various exhaust components have lasted, especially S owners.

Although I haven't looked up close, my muffler has a bit more "color" to it than the usual golden hue I've seen in pis of other owners' rides!

I don't know. It just passed emissions with flying colors.
That would be an indicator, wouldn't it?

Your discoloration is not unusual and the reason I consider the chrome-plated exhaust to be one of the best bang-for-da-buck options.

If Porsche wasn't so intent on nickel-diming every last bit of profit it would/should be standard on the car.

Mine passed as well, with a lot of life left according to the calculations that I don't have before me...but...I would like to know about the new California law that states that during a smog test, the car must have no smoke emitting from the gas pipe in order for it to pass. What do you all think about that?

How could a car pass if it had smoke coming out of the exhaust?
Mind you , when I think smoke, I think black. Is this the case?

It is natural for a Flat engine to shoot black smoke once in a while when starting up. The pistons are laying sideways and sometimes a little bit of oil gets in and you get black smoke when starting up.

Another reason you would get black smoke is that oil from the air and oil seperator is failing and oil is traveling through the J-tube into the intake manifold and some oil are burned.

If constant smoking= Rich mixture. your exchaust tip would have a build up of black stuff.

My 1969 911, which has an engine out of a 1970 911, has it's original exhaust, and it's still working. Though I'll probably replace it in the next couple years with a new stainless heat exchanger system.

So... that's what... 37 years?

37 years is good. Even seven is good.
Just haven't heard many complaints about that particular component. I guess that's good news.
