It Was A Good Run

18 yrs and 90K mi on Punkin - not a door ding or scratch, just some repaired rock chips and a minor scar on the original clear bra.

But that all changed 2 wks ago. Took advantage of 70 deg weather playing a round of golf. When I arrived, the parking lot was overflowing so I had to look for a safe spot among the few available. Parked between 2 pickup trucks, which the lot was full of. The course was hosting a lunch for some construction workers.

On the 16th hole my playing partner who works at the course gets a text that I'm supposed to stop in the clubhouse after the round (the course mgr knows me and my cars). Oh oh, this can't be good. It wasn't. The pickup to my left hit Punkin and left w/o leaving a msg.

However, someone heard the crash and took some pics. 1 of the pics had a clear view of 7 of the 8 letters / numbers of his plate. Called the sheriff and the deputy arrived quickly. Took all my info then asked me to wait. About 20 min later he said they'd figured out the plate and who it belonged to. He gave me a prelim report and said it would be updated in a day.

Didn't look at her until the next day but it almost looked like most of the damage was done to the clear bra. Maybe with a little touch up here and there and a new bra it wouldn't need a new bumper and paint. There was a tiny crack but I could live with it if it meant not painting the whole bumper.

Talked to the guy who does clear bras for Porsche Omaha. He said they could remove the old bra and put a new one on but wasn't excited about it. I knew a body shop wouldn't want to dink around with a partial repair - they want volume - get it in, get it out. That's why I talked to the clear bra guy.

Once the report was updated, I sent the report to his ins co as well as mine. So far, his company, EMC, has been good to work with. They said to get an estimate and send it in. It's been 35 yrs since I've had to do any paintwork on one of my cars, so I asked around my Porsche buddies and got the same answer from all of them, so I went there for an est. Asked if he would be able to get by w/o painting. He said he didn't want to do a partial job due to reputation purposes, so he billed it w/ a new bumper and paint (he said the crack was too deep / long to repair). Came up w/ $4300. Sent the est to EMC. They said they were going to bounce it off the owner as he was debating whether to pay it himself. A day later EMC got back to me and said he was going to run it thru ins.

I'm scheduled for repairs on Mar 16. Fingers crossed they match the paint.

Sorry this had to happen to such a beautiful car. Hopefully Mr. Truck has been charged with hit and run…

Yes, he was cited for leaving the scene of an accident. He reported that he got out and looked (confirmed by the witness) and didn't see any damage. The broken lens was laying on the ground and the scratches are obvious.

My guess is he had been drinking during his lunch and didn't want to face a DUI. Leaving the scene would be less of an issue but he wasn't counting on getting caught.

I would recommend to remove the front bumper and take a closer look below. These seemingly inexpensive damages can quickly become costly.

Glad to hear that the accident perpetrator got cought.

You are sure that the bar behind the cover wasn't damaged and the shocks behind that? My "Oh shoot, that will cost about $3" ding turned out to be $27k when they stopped counting.
