Convertible top popping sound fixed!

So I had noticed an intermittent popping noise when the clamshell was closing after the top was shut. Kind of a crackling little double pop.

I was worried it was in the transmission gears, and have been trying to find the source off and on for a while.

Today I removed the banana shaped plastic covers on the clamshell arms and tried it. No change.

Then, after looking at it for a while I noticed the spring loaded clamshell pushrod was getting very close to the plastic shield behind the transmission. It looks like a big plastic washer with a lip along the bottom. I grabbed the shield and rotated it slightly away from the pushrod.

Success! Noise is gone. The edge of the fat portion of the pushrod was catching the lip of the guard as it went down.

So if you have a mystery pop as the clamshell shuts, give it a try.
