Grant, thank you for heading me in the right direction!
3 of the 9-pin solder points were bad. These looked good to the eye, even with magnification. Your link sent me down the pcb repair rabbit hole and I eventually emerged knowing how to spot the cold joints and re-solder, with a working 9-pin connection in hand, thanks.
who woulda thought one would have to have pcb repair skills to keep these 1/4 century beauties on the road.
