The biggest three items in my opinion are the helmet, tire pressure gauge (nice one like a Longacre) and sunscreen. Of course you'll want to look over the rules to make sure you are dressed properly and the helmet meets the requirements. A few other things I bring:

1) Cooler with lunch and drinks. It is usually hot out and you spend a lot of time standing so it is important to stay hydrated.
2) Umbrella - There isn't always shade if you happen to not have to work all the heats.
3) Folding chairs
4) Bag to put all my stuff in as you will be required to remove everything that could be thrown around.
5) Towel - Not sure why I bring this but it has come in handy to clean off the doors prior to putting the numbers on.
6) Driving gloves - I prefer to drive with gloves.
7) Garbage bag - If it rains I want to be able to protect my stuff.

I don't tape up my car because I get more rock chips from driving on the road than I'll ever get from driving at an autocross. I've only seen a couple cars taped up this past season.
