Hooray

I spend another evening routing wires and tidying up in the interior. Finally all wires are in place and tonight was test night. The test at hand was to check the speedo working. I have my annual inspection coming up and speedo is a checkpoint for sure...

Just to recap, the car is a 97 model. So this featured ABS5.3 with the inductive sensors. I swapped the gearbox to the 987 6-speed (Cayman S G87.21) and needed the driveshafts along with it. These are fitted to 987 wheel carriers to make them fit and have a chance of a working ABS. These sensors are hall effect and incompatible with ABS5.3

So this winter I transplanted ABS5.7 from a newer model (02) into my car. This one is compatible with hall sensors. But typically it gives speed info to the cluster via CAN. So the proofpoint today was that actually ABS5.7 can provide the pulse signal needed for the cluster.

I first had the cluster on 'ESO rear' (I think this means something like electronic speed output). No speed when moving either rear wheel. Checked the sensors, they were good. Then I put the cluster on ESO RL (rear left) and voila, speed appearing when I turn the wheel. Maybe ESO rear will work as well when driving (both wheels rotating), will check this with a real drive test.

Sligthly bad thing, the front sensors are not working. Left front sensor seems good, it gives the right reading, but clearly doesn't follow the 48 pulses/ rev. Right front is stone dead. Need to check the connection on that one. So I'll need to debug the front (but this is not a concern for annual inspection).

Wired up the power and ground of the power steering pump today and took it for a drive. Much better I must say  Checked this evening for obvious leaks from the power steering, but found none around the pump or battery. Need to check at the steering rack itself, but not too worried now.

Also was able to confirm the speedo is reading correctly from the ABS 5.7 now, which is good news.

Didn't work any further on the front sensors yet, so some work needed there, but not crucial for the inspection. I swapped out the microswitch for the top at the upper edge of the windscreen. I was hoping this would fix the windows dropping down issue I have for quite a while now (and was partly solved by adding some thick foam to the latch). I found the old sensor loose in the housing, so that likely was the main issue. New one is tight and I assume it is good. No convertible top error light in the cluster.

Weird thing is, the windows don't go up at all... When I push the down button, I hear a click. Nothing happens as the windows are already down. When I click the up button, no click, nothing. Also long press on the remote does nothing
