1999 Timing/Variocam Issue
 

Hello, Im working on my 1999 2.5L 5spd Boxster. I am having some issues with the timing chain on bank 1 side. Codes are p1340, p1319, p1313-1315. All related to bank one misfires and timing. I pulled timing plugs today and verified timing marks were correct on cam in regards to crank. Using my foxwell scan tool i can look at camshaft deviation. Cam 1 shows 25....while cam 2 shows -6. i understand they shouldnt be more than 6 degrees apart from each other. This leads me to believe either the sensor on bank 1 is faulty, or the variocam solenoid is stuck in fully extended position. Can anyone shine some light on this for me? I can remove the cam cover again and pull the solenoid to inspect. Thank you.

Hi. welcome to the forum. If you have misfires and timing codes occurring together, I would think it's not the sensor, but a timing issue that also causes misfire. (Unless they are not related). When you clear the codes, do all of them come back at once? How does the car run? Did you recently remove the cover (you are saying you can remove the cover AGAIN)? What did you do? Did you inspect/replace the small chain pads? They wear down quickly and can cause the timing to go off. If you are suspecting the solenoids you can easily test them, a lot easier then pulling the cover. You can measure their resistance, or you can even test them directly by activating them with your Foxwell, or using 9V battery after disconnecting it from the harness. You should hear an audible click.

If I clear the codes..they immediately come back immediately. Always those same 5 codes. I pulled the bank 1 timing cover to inspect the wear pads on the actuator. They actually looked in good shape. Previous owner said ims and clutch were replaced. I drove the car exactly as it is now prior to purchase and thought it ran great. Seems to drive fine. I just ordered. Durametric software because I feel the foxwell wasn’t reading well. I will read that link
