Tranny and diff
Hi,
On a 2.5 tip, is the tranny fluid and diff fluid seperate or if you top off one, are you topping off both. I just swapped the tranny fluid last week and realized the right axle had a leak near inside cv joint. If they are together, I won’t rush since just topped off, seperate I’ll get right on it. Thanks. |
I haven't done it, but I have a pair of seals picked up on Rock Auto clearance sale in my parts bin for when needed.
The oil is a 75w90 gear lube. Thank you very much. Very helpful. Two questions, do I need to lower exhaust to remove axle from tranny? 2nd, from the diagram it looks like one bolt holds in the part that blocks the seal. Is it as easy as one bolt or is there more to it?

I have had a differential seal leak which seems like what you have, and that is not related to the transmission fluid. That is gear oil essentially with the location to top it off in the pic above. I found a good write up somewhere, but was a fairly simple install. When you remove it you will lose all of the differential fluid, and can refill when you are done. Getting the CV axle out can be a challenge, but is a little easier on that side. I used it as an excuse to remove it and rebuild the axle bearing and replace the boots which is a messy job. Also be careful removing the differential fill bolt, I think I stripped mine and had to use an easy out to get it off, and actually replaced it with an oil drain bolt I got from a local auto parts store. When replacing it and the CV bolts, clean them and use blue loctite. A CV axle coming loose can cause some damage, and torque them appropriately with new bolts if possible.
