Litronic Retrofit - Issues
I posted this over on Rennlist, but thought I would try here too.
I just refurbished a set of litronics and retrofit to my 99 986. I installed with a factory wiring loom and a control box from ebay. The lights light up, but the servo action doesn't seem to be right. When turning the key to the accessory position the headlights drop and jitter then raise back up. The jitter is what seems odd as other cars I own with xenon lights just move up and down. The second issue is that they do not raise up when I select the bright lights. I double checked the wiring. The control module is getting voltage when the brights are turned on. With control module unplugged the lights no not move at all when the key is turned. The control module I have is 996 618 051 10. Here is a video I took of what happens when I turn the key. https://youtu.be/cYeZAgxJG3A Here is the finished product. :D Sanded with 800,1000,1500,2000,3000, then buffed and protected with Opti-Lens. The aftermarket corners don't exactly match though. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1681870504.jpg |
For the 986.1, maybe 986.2 is same?, the Xenon is a mono-Xenon and the high beam bulb is an incandescent bulb below the projector. If you have retrofitted these projectors and they have a shutter for bi-xenon function, you will need to run the 12v+ wire for that to the shutter motor inside the headlight.

This thread may help if you need to open the headlights:
http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/54697-advice-used-litronics.html Very nice work on restoring the litronics. The next time my lights need to be refurbished I will consider using your process. |
For someone in the future ... I solved my issue. I had originally purchased the incorrect control module. The module I had was for a 996.2 which does not rotate the low beam up when high beam is selected. I swapped in a different module yesterday and it works perfectly. The part number that works is: 99661805102

That is great.
And in this thread one can find other working modules: https://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/55119-986-litronics-plug-play-3.html |
When Litronics are factory fitted, per German law automatic headlight leveling is fitted. It's an electronic unit located nearly under the driver's seat.
Your movement without that is essentially uncontrolled. Also legally required with HID lighting are headlight washers. |
Quote:
"Brain" may be under seat but control arm and sensor measuring angle/vertical level which feeds to "brain" for action is located driver side rear lower control arm. Without arm or sensor the lights will be static under way so no "uncontrolled" movement. Dipping at start up is just motor 'memory' checking limit to ensure unobstructed and resets to 'neutral'. Headlight washers may have been German law but definitely NOT RoW law. Possibly even has been done away completely as had many cars over years w factory Xenon and aka "Lits" (Lexus, Porsche, Ford, etc.) all sans any manner of headlight washer. KC, MO is what 4,000+ miles away from the fatherland to boot. On bright side (punny, huh), kudos to OP for mod and properly fitting projector lights, etc. (OEM too!). As opposed to buying off shelf garbage at PepBoys, AZ, AA, O'Reillys w different focal points and/or not meant for reflector housings. Those infinitely are more dangerous really blinding other drivers... as we've all been victim of countless times. Drive safe and good luck :) |
