Battery question

After the car came back from the shop the battery was weak. It sat for a long time while getting fixed. Battery finally died. Got the new one in.

Question is, should this go on a trickle charger? Or should I let it be since it’s new. Would hate to ruin a new battery.

I have way too many cars, so some of them only get driven about once a month. In my opinion (see the disclaimer in my signature) if you take the car out for at least a 30 minute drive monthly, it should be okay. If it sits longer than that, put a charger on.

If your cars sits between drives the best thing for the battery is a battery maintainer.
a charger or trickle charger puts a constant amperage to the battery you don't want that long term.
A battery maintainer adjusts amperage to the batteries needs.

I plug my Boxster into a maintainer whenever I think it will be more than a couple of weeks before I drive it again. Like most maintainers, mine came with a wiring harness that features a quick disconnect that I can plug/unplug it in seconds without opening the frunk and exposing the battery.
It's easy and painless to use and I don't wonder if my battery is low when I want to drive it. What's not to like??

….A high quality battery maintenance charger is cheap and solves these problems. These cars do not like low voltage.


The 986 has an “always hot” cigarette lighter plug.

There is a cut out in the lower door trim to allow a battery maintainer to be run through the door and plugged into the cigarette lighter plug with the door closed.
