Inaccurate RPM Gauge

I have a 2001 986 that runs and drives great. I do notice however that the rpm gauge at revs above about 3K is not very responsive. Rarely does the cluster gauge go above 3500 rpm. Has anyone had this happen? Is there an obvious fault that is related like a sensor?

Thanks
