Anyone ever shipped a 986 hard top?

Looking to buy one, but they almost never come up for sale anywhere near me. The one that did come up the guy was asking $3K which is ridiculous. Just curious how much the shipping might be to see if it's worth considering one out of state.

If you have shipped one, what were the origin and destination points, and how much was it?

http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/19388-need-help-shipping-packaging-my-hardtop.html

This thread is from the time period in which I was searching for a hard top. The lowest shipping quote at that time was $250. I hope someone with more recent experience can provide an update. I would not be surprised to learn that the cost was 50-100 percent higher now especially when considering the cost of fuel. You also need to add a significant amount for the cost of adequate shipping materials. It appears that a wooden crate is the best option.

Good luck.

I went to Illinois from South Carolina and strapped a Z top to the roof of my wife's Eclipse.... I would not recommend it but it did the job.

If you can fit it on a regular pallet a freight forwarder should be able to take care of you shipping wise. I guess that depends on the type of hard top.

Why bother shipping it? Just drive & pick one up. Leave on a Friday and get back Sunday night. Should get you to at least Kansas. Even with gas prices it will be cheaper then properly having it crated/pallet & shipping.

Shipping costs have gone up drastically since 2009. Since something like this is also going to be slightly larger then a standard pallet, expect to spend around .50/mile total.

I've done it twice for a factory top and my Ztop. There is a website that you put in the item, the pick up point, your location and Haulers bid on the job. Just like the TV show Shipping Wars. My Ztop was added to a load from NY going out west and I'm on not far from I-70 so it was an easy job, paid $250. The factory top was out west and was picked up by a guy hauling an old boat from California to the east coast. He just stuck it in the boat and even helped me put it on my car $300. If your not in a hurry its worth a shot. I cant remember the name but it should be easy to find.

Thanks gang...This would be a long haul, Oregon to Florida. I'll have to check with the seller to see if he's even interested in crating it...

This is of zero help but can't resist posting (perhaps again) ...

... there was once an official Porsche shipping crate offered on eBay. The seller refused to ship it.
