Oil coolers can fail, it's fast more likely with aftermarket parts consider to OEM. I wouldn't "bypass" the cooler, I think that's along for problems. There are kits that detect exhaust gases in your crank case, they are cheap, easy to in use and should give you a better idea of what's going on in right away. If there's exhaust in your crank case, it's not the oil cooler. Cracked head is more likely than bad gasket. The only way to know for sure would be to pull the motor and tear it down.
