I'd be interested in it as a spare for my 2002, but I don't know if I'd want to spend $2K in that type of insurance. I'm not 100% sure it would even fit.

$2k is about average of what wreckers will charge for a long block, sometimes less. I have seen them go for around $1500 depending on miles, yard, location.

Engine would go in any 986 but non egas will require modifications and 00-01 may require wiring/dme adjustments for pinout

I'm sure they'll all bolt up. Point taken on egas vs non egas. Mine has egas, as I'm pretty sure the 2003 does as well. My next concern is the number of timing chains and how it would effect the DME. From what I understand certain years have 3 and certain years have 5. I don't know what mine has vs this 2003 motor.

Garage
The number of chains won't matter, but the '03 - '04 engines run on DME 7.8 and the '02 runs on DME 7.2. They have different variocam versions and the wiring is a little different. It will not be a direct replacement, but people have done it.
Here's a link to a comparison of the DME pin-outs: https://www.renntech.org/forums/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=37889
You may need to be a member of Renntech to open that, not sure.

I'm picking up a neglected '04 tomorrow and may play with running it on a DME 7.2, but don't think it will be simple or a good idea.

Thanks, 78F350. I guess the motor won't work in my 2002, then.
