987 shifter has shorter throws than the 986 assembly (~15%) and MUCH less slop- especially considering my shifter had 144k on it and lots of play in plastic bushings. I wanted to keep things OEM and avoid any notchiness that can come with some short shifters. Cost was $130 for low mileage shifter off eBay.

Yes, the ixi knobs fit our odd blade style shifter. I also liked how the knobs can be etched with a retro looking 5speed shift pattern. Quick shipping and good comm. with seller. I'll shoot a YouTube review soon.
