Reviving stock 986 radio CDR-220
I'm down-grading from a poorly installed cheap 2-DIN unit back to a stock CDR-220 like what would have been on my 2001 S originally. I already have a working CDR-220 from another friendly forum member, and a replacement center dash trim since the old one was damaged, but there are a couple of things I'm still unclear on:
1. Does anyone have any leads on a stock radio harness? The power & misc connector is still there, but the PO cut out the speaker connector. (And/or the amp connector; looks like there might have been an amp at some point.) I can cobble together a custom speaker connector with 0.11" quick connect tabs & some epoxy, but a stock connector would be way quicker. 2. I ordered a used center dash part, looks like 996 552 980 18 from the Porsche catalog, but it doesn't look like it has much "meat" to hold onto the radio. I guess I need the metal insert as well? I found PN 993 645 173 00 that looks like the attached image, but the Porsche catalog just has "retaining bar" listed for the 98-and-on years, 996 552 653 01, which looks flimsy. Is the first one correct for a 2001? Does anything support the radio at the back (towards front of car)? 3. How about a terminal/pin extractor tool for this? It looks like there's a general Boxster electrical terminal extractor that doesn't have anything for the pins in the stock radio harness. Thanks. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1601317697.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1601317716.jpg |
I went through the same thing. Searched everywhere. I ended up going with a Continental (VDO) radio setup from ECS Tuning. The harness for the Continental radio is the same as stock.

For terminal tools, I’ve used these on projects this year:
Rennsteig Superior Quality... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A8FZ1XS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Steelman 95928 10-Piece Terminal... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007QV2MXY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Also grabbed two terminal tools from Napa as well, but the above were used more. The Rennsteig is excellent. |
Amazing! BrantyB, after all the internet sleuthing I did, I don't think I would have ever found this myself. Sure looks like the real thing -- I went ahead & ordered the VDO harness. Thanks.
Deserion, thanks for the leads on removal tools. I've been getting by with my mini-screwdrivers so far, but the radio harness doesn't have enough room next to the pins, so it's about time I invest in the right tool. I might start with a couple from Napa as you mentioned, and then grab the Rennsteig you posted if needed. Have you used any of these on the radio harness? That one looks a bit different, in that plastic catches hold the pins in, rather than metal tabs on the pins themselves. |
