It just STOPPED RUNNING!

1999 986, 5 speed, 60k miles, new cam position sensors and air/oil separator within 25 miles. (To alleviate CE light)..Success.
Running brilliant, no check engine light, water temp and oil pressure proper.
Engine just “turned off”...as if I’d turn the key off. Even with engine rotating (coasting in gear downhill-no tach reading)
All electrics work it seems, except starter does not spin or engage. No noises, no skipping, no warning prior to the engine just shutting down.
The ignition/key start is/has been very hard to turn with the key, seems sticky, gummed up, like it needs lubrication I guess. I’ve tried to “loosen” it up to no avail...
Baffled!
Any help, suggestions, insight welcomed.
