Wheel Center caps

Stupid expensive on e_bay right now. Anyone got a current source? Doesn't have to be OEM but don't want a sticker either.....

Go to Craigslist/Orange County, CA. In the search bar type "Boxster". You'll find the guy in Huntington Beach selling for $50 a set. OEM? No... but I've bought 3-4 sets from him. Not because they fail... but just to have spares on hand.

Rob175 10-24-2019 05:26 AM

I bought a set off eBay about a year and a half ago and they were CHEAP....only about $10 for 4 w/free shipping. Not OEM but they look great and have held up nicely. Tons to scroll through.....keep looking.

I just queried eBay. Please... provide the link to any of those ~$10 sets. My "Porsche Boxster Center Caps" or "Porsche Boxster Wheel Caps" queries revealed nothing, none, zero, close to ~$10.

The CL caps arrived in OEM packaging, each individually sealed (I know they're not OEM). Even the center crests had that protective film. 2 years later and my caps look brand new.

Looking forward to the results you produce.

Thanks!

Still don't see a $10 per set. Perhaps a link?

Racer Boy 10-24-2019 07:53 PM

Not to pile on, but I didn't see any $10 sets either. The $50 CL set looks like the best deal.

Rob175 10-25-2019 06:19 AM

WOW!....things have changed since I bought my set. My appologies to not have the update on their costs. Maybe I should "lock" mine on with glue!...lol.

But I did see these:
Check these out.... $9.99

The first set is not for a 986 (our caps are 76mm, IIRC, those are way too small), and the second set is actually $70 with shipping. ;)

They can still be found on aliexpress, though they can’t show the crest or use the name “Porsche” in the ads, so hard to say what the quality will be, but I’ve had excellent luck.
The search terms used for this screen shot were “Porsche wheel cap”:

Should have gone for these when I was trying to save a few bucks rather than buying the CL guy ones.

Here's my stash...

The first 2 rows are the caps from CL, and I have two sets installed upon my 2 sets of wheels. These are my spares.

The second 2 rows are OEM. At one point I removed one emblem... ascertaining they are metal.

The last row was my first wheel cqap purchase thinking I could install 3-D stickers. Didn't like them, although the color works for me.

Those CL caps... on eBay someone is asking $89 for the set.

A new set of OEM caps, eBay... $299.

Used OEM, on eBay, are $30 each, and look real used.

For sure!

dghii 10-25-2019 05:54 PM

Well at least I know I'm crazy. I appreciate the help. I'd see these caps all over ebay when I had no use for them. No I need a set, no joy!

I've seen the Huntington Beach CL crests advertised on local CL but the ad was so old I was reluctant to contact the buyer. I'll probably go with them.

This is kind of like looking for 'Porsche' stickers for calipers...used to be pages of them but no so much anymore.

40 dollars AND 30 bucks shipping; no deal. I bought a 25 dollar set a couple of months ago...decent. they aren't exact, they aren't OEM but really look much better then the 20YO set I had. If you are still looking, I posted earlier on this, so search for that post and perhaps I noted source in this post?

LOL! I was going to make the same comment. However, I saw that it was mid-afternoon and I thought, "Nope. Too late in the day. No one will take me seriously". ;)

fridsten 11-18-2019 11:15 PM

I've bought center caps from a chinese seller on eBay and though they were cheap, they were also utter crap. Lost two of them while tracking the car... :D

Racer Boy 12-08-2019 03:25 PM

I also ordered the set from ailexpress, and for $11 they look pretty good. Although I have my doubts that they will be as durable as the stock caps, they do seem like a pretty good value!

The silver and black caps are what is on the car now, so these should add some color to my silver and black Boxster.

Why would you leave center caps on when tracking a car?

Banana S 12-09-2019 09:55 AM

I just ordered this set of 4 over the weekend. $23.89 shipped. We'll see how they turn out...

Yes. If they come off and hit, say, a classic 911 or a GT3RS that's following you, you're going to have an unpleasant conversation in the paddock.

For the track and maybe even autocross, YES. They can easily pop out.
The wheels get really hot driving at the track and expand a little. That expansion makes the center caps looser.

If they pop out on the track, they present a hazard and could cause as skid or damage to a car on the track

Racer Boy 12-10-2019 11:09 AM

I've never had my center caps come off at the track, but I probably will take them out for track events now that I think about it. I do have an extra set of wheels that I bought off of CL that are kind of rough cosmetically, so no big deal to take the caps off.

BTW, do you know how hot the wheel would have to get to expand enough for the caps to come off easily? I'm guessing it would be hundreds of degrees, so that isn't why the caps can fly off at the track. The reason is because of the extra vibration from running over alligator curbs while cornering hard. Combine that with old, loose caps, and ping! off they go.

If the caps are a little loose to start with, it would not take much expansion (and that would not require 100's of degrees of heat) to have them loose enough to pop out, especially considering the vibration you mentioned. I know that when I have changed wheels right after a track session, the wheels were f'in HOT

IIRC, our PCA club requires them to be removed for track events.

maytag 12-11-2019 06:10 AM

I'm a bit vain, I guess.
I put a couple dabs of silicone on the center caps when I put them in. They're not coming out at the track. And I use ALL the track.... gator teeth and all.

I'm thinking that for aluminum to get hot enough to expand that much, the tires would start to melt. But we can agree to disagree, JayG.

Good idea, Maytag. I might do that with my $11 new caps. I'd hate to loose what must be one of the least expensive parts on my Porsche.

Last weekend I finally fixed my window regulator problem on the passenger door, to the tune of a new regulator and then a latch unit. $700 in parts! The $11 for the caps seems to be too good to be true.

Just following up on my post above. My center caps arrived yesterday and look identical to the center caps posted above. Shipping took a while (two and a half weeks), shipped directly from China. For $23.89 all in for a set of four, shipped, I'm pretty happy.
