I think they'd be a steal at TWICE that price! Well done!

You could be more pleased? I'll bite: what would make you more pleased?

An N, an apostrophe, and a T!

I guess I could have been more pleased if I'd had my glasses when I was replying!

LOL! I was going to make the same comment. However, I saw that it was mid-afternoon and I thought, "Nope. Too late in the day. No one will take me seriously". ;)

I've bought center caps from a chinese seller on eBay and though they were cheap, they were also utter crap. Lost two of them while tracking the car... :D

Racer Boy 12-08-2019 03:25 PM

I also ordered the set from ailexpress, and for $11 they look pretty good. Although I have my doubts that they will be as durable as the stock caps, they do seem like a pretty good value!

The silver and black caps are what is on the car now, so these should add some color to my silver and black Boxster.

Why would you leave center caps on when tracking a car?

Banana S 12-09-2019 09:55 AM

I just ordered this set of 4 over the weekend. $23.89 shipped. We'll see how they turn out...

Why not? Should I remove them?

Yes. If they come off and hit, say, a classic 911 or a GT3RS that's following you, you're going to have an unpleasant conversation in the paddock.

For the track and maybe even autocross, YES. They can easily pop out.
The wheels get really hot driving at the track and expand a little. That expansion makes the center caps looser.

If they pop out on the track, they present a hazard and could cause as skid or damage to a car on the track

Racer Boy 12-10-2019 11:09 AM

I've never had my center caps come off at the track, but I probably will take them out for track events now that I think about it. I do have an extra set of wheels that I bought off of CL that are kind of rough cosmetically, so no big deal to take the caps off.

BTW, do you know how hot the wheel would have to get to expand enough for the caps to come off easily? I'm guessing it would be hundreds of degrees, so that isn't why the caps can fly off at the track. The reason is because of the extra vibration from running over alligator curbs while cornering hard. Combine that with old, loose caps, and ping! off they go.

If the caps are a little loose to start with, it would not take much expansion (and that would not require 100's of degrees of heat) to have them loose enough to pop out, especially considering the vibration you mentioned. I know that when I have changed wheels right after a track session, the wheels were f'in HOT

IIRC, our PCA club requires them to be removed for track events.

maytag 12-11-2019 06:10 AM

I'm a bit vain, I guess.
I put a couple dabs of silicone on the center caps when I put them in. They're not coming out at the track. And I use ALL the track.... gator teeth and all.

I'm thinking that for aluminum to get hot enough to expand that much, the tires would start to melt. But we can agree to disagree, JayG.

Good idea, Maytag. I might do that with my $11 new caps. I'd hate to loose what must be one of the least expensive parts on my Porsche.

Last weekend I finally fixed my window regulator problem on the passenger door, to the tune of a new regulator and then a latch unit. $700 in parts! The $11 for the caps seems to be too good to be true.

Just following up on my post above. My center caps arrived yesterday and look identical to the center caps posted above. Shipping took a while (two and a half weeks), shipped directly from China. For $23.89 all in for a set of four, shipped, I'm pretty happy.
