That's what I do. My 99 still has the original top and it is as tight as a drum.

I keep it latched, but if you have any windshield dings, or a crack, loosen the top by opening the top latch. When it gets cold, the top will shrink and put additional pressure on the windshield which could cause it to crack. This happened on my MG. Small stone ding at the bottom of the windshield caused a 6 inch crack over the winter.
