cam sensor
Not much traffic on some of the other forums so thought I would post here to see if anyone can help.
Have a 2000 986 2.7 tiptronic. Getting P1340. From what I have been able to find I should get 5v between pins 1 & 3 with key on and 0v between 2 & 3 with the key off.
With key on I get 5v to pin 1 & 3 and 12v to pin 2 & 3
At this point I am actually hoping it is the dme and not wiring. The car does start & run, although it idles rough. Once I get it out it drives fine with the rough idle. I shouldn't see any voltage between pins 2 & 3 with the key on or off right?

If you are only getting the P1340, and no cam position sensor codes, you have a timing chain out of position high on bank #1
And yes, I am the same guy that told you the same thing and to stop buying cheap Beck/Arnley cam position sensors and get the real thing on the other forum………………...

Thanks but the sensor you refer to as junk was installed in bank 2 not bank 1 which is where the code is referring to.
The question I have isn't about the sensor, it's about the voltage readings and if the issue is most likely the dme or wiring.

Have you scanned the engine and determined the actual cam positions yet? If you don’t know the actual cam allocations, it would be difficult to say if the issue is wiring related or a true mechanical issue.

Right now I am looking to just find out if the DME should be putting 12v out on the cam sense pins (19 & 20) with the key on.
I know a bad DME can cause cam sensor, o2 & misfire issues. If someone knows for a fact that these pins should not be putting out 12v with the key on as I suspect or can check theirs when they have a moment that will verify that the issue is with the DME.
At the moment neither sensor is hooked up

The troubleshooting guide says that you should not get battery voltage at pin 19 & 20. However, I believe this is incorrect. I was trying to solve the same code as you and went through probably a similar process. I DID receive battery voltage at pin 19 & 20. Eventually I exposed both sensors, swapped them, the code jumped to the other bank, and I bought a new sensor. 3000 km on the new sensor and all is well.
You can read through my thread here: https://rennlist.com/forums/boxster-and-boxster-s-986-forum/1139864-p0340-camshaft-bank-1-what-could-go-wrong.html
I realise that the problem is not always due to a sensor failure, but the impression I got when I started looking into it was that it was never a sensor failure.

Tried posting a reply yesterday, but it didn't seem to go through.
I can confirm that you SHOULD get battery voltage from pin 19 and 20. The troubleshooting guide that says you should get 0 volts is incorrect.

Thank you!
My next step is going to be replacing the sensor. Unfortunately though the allen bolt is stripped so I am going to have to drill the head out. Might have to drop the engine cause of the small amount of space, my dewalt is just a little too big to get in there.

This time don't buy the cheap Beck/Arnley cam position sensor.

well considering that isn't what is installed in bank 1 I dont see how it is relevant. That sensor was installed in bank 2, not bank 1 and wasn't even kept in.
