Removing Finish from Console

Hi All,
2002 Porsche Boxster Base. The finish on the console and several other plastic parts is pretty scratched, as seen in the pic. But the plastic underneath seems to be a uniform dark grey color that would match my interior nicely.

Has anyone attempted removing the finish and what results did you get? What did you use?

Wrap it with vinyl.

Lots of folks have DYi'ed this if you do a little searching. I currently have my console and horseshoe out of the car to be stripped and painted by a local body shop. I'll post pics when done. Won't be cheap but it'll look a lot better than I feel I could do.

Soak it in a very hot water bath, then go to town with a scotchbrite pad. It’s a mess, but comes right off. Finish to your liking. Personally, I wouldn’t wrap it with that much scratching etc, good chance you will see it if wrapped properly. Strip, then wrap.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I don't think the scratches go beneath the finish, and I believe the plastic beneath is OK although I won't know for sure until I remove the finish. If it looks fine, couldn't I just leave the bare plastic? Or should I keep it protected with a wrap or paint or something?

If you want something special like carbon fiber or ? I would wrap it. Otherwise, I'd use an epoxy paint and rattle can it. Thing about paint is you can pretty easily repair it at a later time. Don't use chemical strippers, ever.

I had the same issue with a similar vintage VW.
I found that rubbing with a rag soaked in denatured alcohol took the messy finish off. It was a easy, cheap fix that worked.
I then repainted the parts using a matt finish black paint.

You could leave it just plastic, but it looks pretty funky with the soft touch removed...
