Is there a VW part for the coolant tank cap?

Let me be completely honest here: I'm not a purist. I buy my cars to drive them and I really don't care if the part says Porsche or VW or even Ford if it keeps the car on the road. I've put a ton of VW parts into my Cayenne over the years, usually at about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of an equivalent Porsche part. My 928 has a Chevy alternator (a much better part than the original Bosch/Rhone), and a Passat blower motor.
Early coolant caps are $25, which isn't a lot of money, but seems like a stupid amount of money for a part that costs $5 if it's for a VW.

Does anyone know of a VW (or whatever) coolant cap for first gen cars?

Thanks.

Generally I agree with you and you could probably find one, but just buy an .04 part number porsche one. I mean its $20 difference...come on.

A few years ago I bought a couple W0133-1856853-FEB for $12 ea shipped. They are $25 ea now. The packaging they were in had the Porsche part number ending with the .04
This URO part costs under $2. They are a little different though. I love my Boxsters more that $2. If you'd like to give it a try please report back with the review.

ECS Tuning has the VW/Audi genuine version.
For $46!
Or pay $26 for a Porsche genuine at Pelican.

I'll order the $2 cap and see what happens. If it doesn't fit, then I'll order the one from Pelican.
 Further updates as events warrant.

How about a heavy duty plastic sandwich bag and some duck tape. Use a sharpie and write an '04' on it. I'll bet that's under $2

Sandwich bag? Psh. Not enough expansion. It definitely calls for a condom.

If you don't mind it saying Gates or Stant, ******************************** sells for $5. I have been running their Stant one for over a year with no issues.

Reminds me of something i did when I was much younger and needed a quick solution.

Old Renault plastic radiator, the lip that holds the filler cap broke. Used 1 ea bath tub stopper, 2 wireties. Jammed the stopper in the radiator after making sure it was full, used the wire ties to hold it in. Damn thing didnt leak and i drove it six months that way until i could afford a radiator. Mechanic blew a nut out laughing so hard!

I've kept cars running for years with chunks of coat hanger and, in the case of an old Fiat, a PVC plumbing 'T'.

So, after a week with the $2 cap, including a six-hour round trip to Dallas in 100+ degree weather, it is functioning perfectly.
