I added the 987 rear speaker with subwoofer to my 2000 Boxster S
Fairly easy setup. Run power, RCA cable, speaker wires, and amp turn on signal to the area.
Much improved sound over just the front speakers. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1522021192.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1522020968.jpg |
interesting - it fits with the 986 rollbar ok?
|
It fits just like the 986 version, and secures to the rear deck the same way.
|
cool. any idea what the quality/volume would be if you just ran with the rear unit and no door or dash speakers?
|
Does this only work for 986:es with the BOSE (MOST) sound packages?
|
It could work for any 986. I don't have Bose.

Has this unit an integrated amp?
If yes, how will get the MOST bus signal to the amp? |
I know where 2 are at $187.50 ea.

and, i have the 987 engine cover, so was uncertain whether to use the 986 or 987 rear speaker unit, as didn't know if they would fit with the cover/roll bar; good info to know. |
I looked at ripping out the MOST system and all the associated stuff. In the end I bought a Bose Mini Soundlink II. Cheaper than a head unit. No wiring, 10 hrs battery and sounds great. Also goes into the garden, work and anywhere else.

crazy - i have two of those at home. loud enough for cruising around?
|
Perfect for cruising. If going for a proper burn I prefer the flat six sound track screaming to the redline so it gets thrown in the glovebox then.

Cool. Please send me some info. Thanks.

I had one of those, got stolen by one of my sons jackass friends. :(. Couldnt proove which one, stole set of headphones also.
I just dont like loose things sitting around driving normal and an emergency stop things go flying. |
OP, That is seriously too cool. Looks a ton better than the factory bose!
|
I contacted pdwight about making a harness to make this mod plug and play. He didn't think too many would be interested. Let him know if you are.

Hi,
Just read your post on addiing the Bose sub shelf to the system. I just purchased one my self and would like to hook it up to a aftermarket Clarion head unit in my 987 Boxster. Would you be able to explain me the meaning of the wires ( colour codes ) which are connected to the subwofer build in AMP. Ihave http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1556197372.jpg Would be much appreciated. Thx in advance. Thomas |
Hi!
I'm going to embark on this myself, and I'd love to know how you ended up doing this. Will it work with the stock M490 amp or did you have to do something different? What connectors and cables? etc. Quote:

1 - Amp power +
2 - Amp power - 3 - Subwoofer remote 4 - Subwoofer + 5 - Subwoofer - 8 - Rear Right - 9 - Rear Right + 10 - Rear Left + 11 - Rear Right - |
I did the same just last weekend. I wish I had seen the post above! I didn't realize how simple it would have been to wire up that existing amp. I chucked that 987 Bose amp and went with an aftermarket mono amp.
One question... based on the pin out above where does the amp/box pick up signal? |
Quote:
How'd you wire it into your M490 amp? Or did you go directly from your head unit? |
I went directly from head unit.
|
Someone asked about the sound quality. I mean it's not a 12" sub, but you do get some nice bass out of it. I am definitely not yearning for more.
|
Just ordered one on eBay.
Is there an idiots guide to wiring this up somewhere ? Like initial questions I have is the built in amp powering both subs and the two full drivers and does it expect line or speaker level signal ? |
Subwoofer + and - in the wiring pinout is line level.
|
Awesome.
Thank you. |
If anyone has one of these for sale please let me know.

Assuming this is hardwired, how do you remove it when you need to access the engine? The current speaker box just unplugs easily.
|
It just unplugs
|
I wonder if it plugs to the stock 986 speaker harness
|
it wont plug in, but you could splice it in. You wont really get any good sound out of it though since the output will be all freq. instead of just the low for a sub. Really needs to be run to an amp...factory or aftermarket....or you need to have a crossover between the radio & sub.
|
The 987 sub box includes a built-in amp for the sub. It connects and disconnects in the same spot as the 986 box.

I'm trying to determine how these will plug into the back of a head unit? Or is that in a non-Bose car, you have to split the those two connected pairs into 4 separate wires? |
