Last of the Analog Porsches

For those of you interested there’s an article and video in this months Panorama about the last of the analog Porsches. The 968, 993 and all of our favorite the 986.

I think we can add the 996 to this list as well.

Truthfully though, anything with s DME is technically not analog.

The D in DME stands for digital. :-)

Perhaps an early 986 with a mechanical gas pedal and no PSM or traction control is still analog. I would say there is a spectrum of grays between analog and digital. My 2003 has DME, e-gas and PSM, so it is certainly more towards digital than analog.

Being mostly analog is one of the things I like the most about my 1999. The steering wheel is physically connected to the steering rack, the gas pedal has a physical cable to the throttle, and while I am not opposed to PSM I do like the idea that the car is, for better or worse, is doing exactly what I want it too. Honestly, I consider most of the electronics in new cars more things that will be expensive to repair when they break.

My '89 Carrera 3.2 Targa had DME. But no power steering. I see gray.

One of the things I like about my 2000 S is the lack of driver aids. It just seems a simpler purer form of driving. Call me an old fashion Luddite.

I like it really old school-hand crank to start, hand operated fuel pump on the dashboard and manual ignition advance in the center of the steering wheel. Extra points for oil burning headlamps and a brass horn with a rubber bulb to squeeze!

That's funny, I've actually been referring to my 986 as an analog experience for a few months now. It's getting harder and harder to find a car these days that doesn't have traction control, stability management, or some kind of electronic nanny. I like that the most help my base model is going to give me is a little ABS and nothing else.

Mine is definitely more analog, with cable throttle, manual trans and original and still functioning Becker CR210 cassette/ radio with 4-tape storage shelves with no stinking CD changer (removed by previous owner)!!!

When I bought my Boxster two summers ago I dug old music tapes in basement and even ‘dubbed’ some music tapes off of CD, it was very refreshing actually and I appreciate all those electro mechanical system with auto search, skip, reverse, you name it! Most of time I just listen to engine and exhaust with top down, but the tape adds to retro/ vintage vibe I’m after so much that I still debate to get a $60 Blaupunkt Bluetooth player...

I quite liked the article too and thought it made some good points.

I like to think of the 993/986/996 era as the transition era from analog to digital. The cars in this era certainly had digital elements but were still very analog as compared to the cars that came after them (which I think we can all agree are VERY digital).

But in comparison, my 911SC doesn't have any of the tech that the Boxster has; power steering, ABS, traction control (which was an option even on 2.5L Boxster's), electronic climate controls, ECU, OBD-II, push-button top, etc.

And then my friend with a 356 considers my 911SC to be full of "modern" technology like fuel injection, electric windows, air conditioning, automatic choke (aka WUR), etc.

There's probably a guy with a horse somewhere thinking that any mode of transportation that isn't alive and kicking is far too modern.

I don't have any pics of our '13 T, which fit your description exactly. Here are a cpl pics of the '24 & '26 Ts, which we still have. They do have electric starters, however.

Definitely analog.
