The e brake shoes could seize against the inside of the e brake drum in the rotor hat. Not sure if it's a form of galvanic corrosion or rust grabbing ahold of the shoe material.

E-brake consideration is always a good idea. The 'out of gear' is not something I consider - over 16 years of storing vehices over the winter and I leave it in gear - never an issue.

Yeah, me too...for 10+ years anyway. Though, in my case, I suppose it's not necessary: the car sits in the garage, a completely level surface. Still, in the spring she slides outta gear just as smoothly as she slide into gear in the early winter.. I DO leave the brake off however.
