Camshaft position sensor help
Before you tell me to search the forum for the answer, I did, I am a black and white procedural oriented individual (former submarine Sailor). I have the 101 Projects and a Bentleys, I've searched Youtube and can not find how and where to access the Camshaft position sensor to either check voltage or replace the units. Last week I had a flashing CEL with the P0341 code along with 9 others. The weather is nice and I want to drive my 99 Box base.
Would someone please point me in the right direction? How and where do I access them? |
You need to post all the codes with their descriptions. That many codes is a complicated problem. You need to be able to look at all the codes together to make a correct diagnosis.

I'm sure by now everyone is tired on this thread, however, I have another question.
Do I need to remove the AOS and intake manifold behind the drivers seat to access both camshaft position sensors? I spent the better part of the afternoon searching for them and was only able to put eyes on the one behind the drivers seat. With that said, I could not see any way to access it w/o removing the manifold. All I want to do is get the car back on the road. Neither the Bentleys or 101 Projects provide adequate details on how to access them. |

If it really is the "Cam Sensor"(unlikely) it is more likely a wiring fault to the Cam sensor.
So you need to check for signal at the sensor connector, not just replace the sensor. Access is awful . |

I did not have all 3 codes like you do but after I replaced the passenger side sensor I got a code for the drivers side sensor. I replaced that and the code would not go away. So I took it to a indy shop and they found the passenger side cam positioning solenoid was bad. They replaced it and I have been code free for over a year. Edit: I did not have to remove anything except move the AOS out of the way for either sensor. |
If I can figure how to disconnect the lines to them and check their voltage, I will try that first. Again, I still cannot figure how to get in there to disconnect them. Looks like another evening trying to figure this out. Thanks for the assist.

I've replaced 2 of them on my 2003. Swapped them and sure enough, the code followed the sensor around.

I measured cam position 1 and 2 deviations with the Durametric, Cam 1 was steady at 3.22 cam 2 was reading -0.45 and steady. The car is a 2004 Boxster s, there are no engine alarm codes or cel, the car seems to be operating properly. My understanding is these two readings should be close(ER) together. I uninstalled the software re downloaded and reinstalled the software. When checked After this the observed values were the same. If it was a failed sensor I would have assumed there would be error codes or noticeable performance degrade. What have others observed? Thanks Rick
