You think that's expensive...
Here in Victoria, Australia, a custom plate costs $500 AUD, that's $395 USD. At least you don't have to pay for it every year.
If you want just 3 numbers (e.g. 986) or two letters (e.g. FP), the price is around $1000. If you can get one. I saw the plate 239 auctioned a few weeks ago for $70,000.
And did I mention we can be fined for doing 3kmh over the limit?
Registering a sportscar here is akin to cruelty. Luckily they can't police all the roads all of the time ;-)
Anyway, I've been looking at the authority's website to register one, which has rules to prevent you registering plates that might be offensive.
So...
You can't have BLK-BOX or LRG-COK
But you can have SML-COK
Funny that.

I like CRAMER's "AZZ MAN", but for me it would have to be "CAREFREE", or "RELAX" or "moveover" Or my favorite, "ROTFLMA" (Rolling On the Floor Laughing My Ass Off) I know, but someone might not know what it means.
Side note, I wanna get one of those LED read out that you can program from the cockpit and send people messages after i pass by. Like "About time grandma","jack ass"(for the slow people and truckers in the speed lane). Or if you see a hottie with a dude, you could say "Hey, I knew I recognized the back of her head".

Always wanted one that read "TI 3VOM"...... That way, when the slow-poke ahead of you reads it in his rearview, it will read MOVE IT

Imcookn
Since I am a chef I wanted something to indicate that but not be too egocentric.
When people asked me how I was I would answer "I'm Cooking" as an inside joke so that's why I picked the plate.

I am not sure if anyone posted this link yet, but here is a link to vanity plates where people complained about them...it is pretty funny:
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/wiscplates1.html
The most creative one has to be 6Q 2Q.
The guy then put a negative sign in front of the 2 so it is 6Q -2Q
That equals 4Q

The downside of my 5CHN3LL plates: A cop followed my wife for five miles trying to figure out what it mean - and finally pulled in behind her at a 7-11 (she turned into that lot because she was freaking out with a squad car following her) and asked her.

those are hilarious. Amazing how people spend their time. I think they are not sharing their skin or it is droll.

Not plate related, but after the engine failed on my Boxster my wife said she was going to buy me a bumper sticker for it that said, "Buy American."

I got this for the Box S...years ago at Road America, a semi-pro racer friend of ours called us a bunch of "fence jockeys" because we're always hanging on the fence, spectating at Turn 5. We've since had t-shirts made and sell them at the souvenir stand.
Only those that hang around Road America know the meaning when they see it!

"GUD N FST" was originally on my old 911, but I liked it so much I kept it when I bought the Boxster. I originally saw it on an Audi S4 in Arizona. The sad part is I just moved to California and this plate isn't available. My new California plate will read "DAH CUBS".
