IMS Solutions
I just got a quote back for an IMS Solutions bearing replacement. For that and the RMS, the quote was $4,900 including tax. Am I correct to assume this is quoted way too north of what is ordinarily expected?

The IMS solution is much more expensive than the IMS pro. Is this a tiptronic or a stick? Tips are more epxnsive as pulling the tip is more involved

Does that quote include the clutch and flywheel? My Indy quoted me $3,200 for the IMS solution with RMS and AOS for a Tip!

No flywheel or clutch. It's six speed, and per the quote, a tip would have added another $1,000 to the cost. How did your indy get the parts? From what I see, only the approved installers can get the gear. I can live with paying $3,200 and use the extra $1,700 to enjoy Florida for a week.

I think you'd best be served by a 2nd or 3rd quote. That quote looks too high to me. My indy actually dropped the engine and the trans to do the work, which I don't think many standard installers do. He purchased the IMS directly from LN. My quote was $2,800 with the AOS with the Tip. It came to $3,200 with the RMS due to the labor. The IMS Solution was $1,200 vs 800 for the Retro fit I think.

The parts are about $1800.
There is no way this is $3,000 or approximately 30 hours worth of labor.
I'd get another quote and be happy at about the $3,000 range.

The IMS Solution adds considerable parts costs compared to a normal LN retrofit, and adds about one hour in labor for machining the cases to allow the oil line to access the flange and setting up the spin on adaptor and routing the oil line.

I got a quote from a local shop and it was $2,000 for the double row LN bearing and $3,200 for the solution. The solution with RMS, clutch and flywheel was quoted as and $4,700 (parts and labor). That seems to be a much more reasonable price. Looking over the quote from the approved installer, they had a lot of extras, such as a prequalification that they priced at $420 (insert 420 joke here).

Prequalification is not a joke. You might be surprised at the number of cars that do not pass..............

As a reference I had this work done about a year ago on a 03 Carrera for $2,700 out the door. That included pre-qual, LN bearing, RMS, AOS, clutch, oil, oil filter, labor and tax. Not sure, but I believe the Carrera is a little more on labor than the Boxster. Parts are going to be similar in costs everywhere but this independent (Porsche factory trained and 12 years 986/996/987/997 experience and a approved LN installer) is a small shop with low overhead and a very reasonable labor rate. I had the same shop do my Boxster sans the clutch for about $1,800 about 4 years ago.

I'm guessing you got the LN IMS retrofit, not the "IMS Solution".

Should be under 3000. Bearing is 1500 and 8 hours of labour. Maybe they are including a clutch?

I had the best P-car shop in the region do the following on my '02 S:
-Waterpump, thermostat, serpentine belt, coolant flush
-Replace RMS
-Replace IMS with LN Single Row Pro ceramic unit
-New clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing
-New dual mass flywheel ($600 part alone)
-Install Gbox 2nd gear popout prevention kit
-Replace AOS
-Oil change with Gibbs DT40
-A couple of other odds and ends
All of that work came to $5800 parts and labor, which was a lot but given the shop doing the work I felt was worth the cost.
I would not think $4900 for just the IMS Solution is good value for money. Then again, I wouldn't do the IMS Solution as I don't daily drive my car or subject it to much extreme use (and if you're doing the latter, the IMS isn't where you should be putting your $).

Beware of comparing apples to oranges quotes. Beware comparing labor costs from one location to another unless you are willing to move the car. Beware comparing buying a part from a supplier and the cost of the same part from a mechanic with his overhead in ordering and guaranteeing the part.
Understand what the pre-qualification is and what condition the engine/car will be in should the engine fail pre-qualification. Will the pan be reinstalled, the seals guaranteed, the oil changed, the filter changed. pre-qualification isn't just a "look at the filter" anymore.

Whatever the cost the IMS solution is worth it. Seems some people are not talking apples and apples in the thread. If the cost ofnthe solution is 1725 from L&N, which JFP
Knows it is, no one is going the do the job for less than 3k. And you would really want to address other parts as long as its apart, So the OPs
4700 number does not seem that unreasonable at all. Once the solution is installed there is no further IMS maintenance required for as long as you keep the car. If you don't plan on keeping it, then a bearing would suffice, but your resale value is going to be higher with the solution than anything else. It's a no brainer to me. I was hanging around these forums when the only option available was a replacement engine from Porsche after a catastrophic failure. What L&N/Flat6 started and ultimately provided was a gift at these prices.
