I asked the same question. The crank still rotates with the car in gear because of the dual mass flywheel. It shouldn't matter first gear or 5th gear if the parking brake is on hard.

I had a buddy use my old belt to hold the pulley with the car in gear and parking brake on and it was sufficient to tighten the bolt.
