New '00 Boxster S
 

I finally pulled the trigger. Its my 4th Porsche and my first convertible. I've been driving for 37 years! Its an '00 S imported from Japan a few years ago...Polar Silver with blue leather heated 2 way electric sport seats, matched roll bar and windstop, factory sound system, 100k km, LN IMS bearing, newer top and a pretty clean car all around. It needs a few things such as remote fob (none of them work), one CV boot and rear brakes soon.

Its got a few nice options. Here are a few. I'm not up to speed on the ASR and ABD. There are no option codes listed for the sound system but it has factory door and dash speakers and a front mounted CD changer and amp.

I wish imports from Japan were easier to get approved for use in California.The RHD would not bother me but the red tape is daunting.There are a few companies that do it (for a handsome price!) but it is impractical for an individual to do so.

Nice looking Boxster.

Boxsters with "TC" (the more primitive traction control up through about 2001?) have what is called "ABD" or "Active Brake Differential" and "ASR" or "Anti Slip Regulation"


From the Bentley Manual:

Available as an option through the 2000 model year, ABS/TC 5.3 is
an extension to the basic Porsche ABS system with the added
feature of traction control. The traction control system is made up of
two sub-systems, Automatic Brake Differential (ABD) and Anti Slip
Regulation (ASR).

Automatic Brake Differential (ABD) functions similar to a locking or
limited slip differential to help the vehicle retain traction. Uslng the
ABS wheel speed sensors to detect wheel spin during acceleration,
the ABS control module will pulse the hydraulic pressure line of the
brake caliper of the spinning wheel to assist the vehicle in gaining
traction.

If ABD intervention is not enough to regain traction, the ABS/TC
system will employ Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR). ASR adjusts fuel
Injector cycles and retards Ignition timing to reduce engine torque.
When the Traction Control system is operational, the indicator lamp
on Instrument panel is illuminated.

The traction control function can be disabled by means of the TC Off
switch located on the center console. If the TC system is
switched off, the TC warning lamps in the instrument panel and the
TC Off switch are illuminated.

NOTE- ABD remains active until vehicle speed reaches 62.5 miles per
hour, even if the TC system is turned off.

LHD and from Japan, that's pretty rare. Nice looking car btw.

Thanks everyone. I ordered a new Continental Bluetooth head and harness to start. I'll get the local indy to do a coolant flush and maybe check the alignment. Rear brakes should be on order soon too. I see that the axles are pretty cheap. Its seems hardly worth it to change the boots? I do need a need remote. It looks like Suncoast is the place to go for that.

You may want to consider having your remote repaired. You may even be able to repair it yourself.

Forum member particlewave posted a good DIY on the process. You can even send your remote to him for repair.

Of course, you can buy a new one, but be prepared for some serious sticker shock.

Thanks. $150 USD plus reprogramming at the dealer I guess. I might send one of the non-working ones to him in the winter. I'm not sure if it bothers me that much yet.

The car is running nicely and is in great shape. I had it up on my lift again for a closer look. It needs an outer CV boot and the large water pump hose looks a little swollen. I booked it into the local indy shop for that. I can't take it off the road for more than a day because its my daily driver right now. A coolant change has a staggering price as they only use Porsche coolant. The good news is that the rear brake pads have lots of life left although the rotors have a good ridge. Thickness is ok. I guess they just changed pads last time around. I even got touch up paint from the local body shop supply house for $11. Beats Dr. Colorchip at $60 Cdn plus shipping! Wiper blades are noisy and it needs a few other minor things. Charles is going to fix my remote. My Continental Bluetooth head and harness are on the way too. I forgot to check the date code on the tires before I bought it but they are 2015 so no issues there. I should keep things under $2k which is what I usually expect on a used car.
