It only happens in first gear and is worse when the car is cold. Does this mean a new clutch?

Hi,
I don't think so, a bad clutch usually manifests itself by slipping, not by a noise. What does have noise symptoms associated with it are a Throwout Bearing or Pilot/Spigot Bearing.
But, on a Boxster, none of these noises would be coming from the front. The front would more possibly be a wheel bearing, Power Steering rack or something with a brake caliper. Best to have someone give it a look...
