Boxster 986 one touch roof module (Boxstertop)
Since Robo-Top stopped producing one touch roof operation modules for the 996 cabrio and 986 Boxster the only other options available to us open top Porsche enthusiasts are such as the SmartTop costing over £250. As an Electronic engineering student I decided to take it upon myself to find a solution to this and I present "Boxstertop" available here:
Porsche boxster carrera cabriolet 996 986 one touch roof module (Boxstertop) | eBay
I've only produced 7 of these modules at present one of which I use myself. I intent on producing more if there's an interest.
Boxstertop is a Convertible Top Module That Allows One-Touch Operation for 986 Boxsters and 996 Cabriolets.
Details:
- One-Touch Convertible Operation for 986 Boxsters and 996 Cabriolets (now you only need to make a quick press of the switch to drop the roof of your convertible so your not stuck holding the button)
- Do it Yourself 5 Minute Installation (Reversible and Very Easy see instructional video below)
- Ability to Stop Movement Mid Operation (simply press the switch again in either direction and the roof will stop where ever it is until a direction is once again pressed)
- OEM Settings Included (Holding Button Down for more than one second will result in top being lowered until released like normal while a quick single touch will lower it all the way)
- works on:
996 911 Cabriolets (1997-2004)
986 Boxsters (1996-2004).
- It is also Possible to Use While Moving with some simple modification, Visit this Link to See How https://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/16134-convertible-top-hack-disable-speed-and-handbrake-overrides/
- To see Installation instruction video please see link

This sounds just like the ComfortTop module I found on here last year or so.
It included the ability to operate while moving.

In order to operate while moving, you bend pin 18 on the relay.
That's the same with many of the auto top solutions

Any idea what the time frame is? I'm looking to get one of these by spring, so I'm not in a terrible rush, but I don't want to miss out.
Otherwise looks like I'm ordering out of the UK.

I'm not sure when that will be I've been watching the RoboTop website for what must be over a year now as I wanted to purchase one for myself before I took things into my own hands and its always said on the site out of stock. Last I read on a forum is someone else purchased the business from the original designer but hasn't been very productive in building anymore devices.

One..
...of the modules out there lets you put the top in the perfect service position automatically.
Does yours do this?

I didn't even think of that as a feature, at present no these do not do that but I will try and add that to it I imagine it won't be too difficult will keep you posted.
thanks for the feedback

Parking may be non-standard as the parking position may need to be different for glass, glass replacement for '97-'02 frames and plastic windows. Might want to check.

I've seen two different solutions for this; for the 2003-2004, not only do you have to bend Pin 18, but 15 as well and then wire in a jumper wire inside the relay.

The auto stop at service position sounds like a nice feature but having used a Smart Top for over 5 years with both plastic and now later glass roof it has never been an issue to get the roof in the right position. I don't think I've ever had to adjust the roof position as I didn't get it right the first go.

** Update **
I bought the RoboTop business from the original owner/designer (Tyler). I re-designed the product to improve reliability and sold many RoboTop units. Subsequently, I sold the RoboTop business (quite a while ago) and to the best of my knowledge the new owner has not re-launched the website or product. At this point, it would be reasonable to assume that its not coming back.

There is a thread with a DIY version. Search for autotop.
It is built on a audrino platform.
Pretty easy to make with a parts cost IIRC under $25

I purchashed a smart top relay this year, works great. Auto open or close while moving or parked, hand brake off. Was expensive and had oil on it when it arrived, other than that been happy. I am glad someone came up with another solution. As EDC mentioned putting into service mode has not been an issue.
