New plasti-Dip

After almost 4 years of having Plasti-Dip on my wheels it was time for a refurbish of my wheels. Up went my car on jack stands and off came my wheels. After trying to peel it off I knew there had to be a better way, so I soaked the wheels in WD-40 overnight and the next day sprayed on some Goo Gone. The next thing was to pressure wash the wheels with a 2700 psi pressure washer. This is a durable finish but no match for 2700 psi. Next I sprayed on some de-greaser and used a brush to get rid of the grime on the inside of the wheels. As long as the wheels were off I figured that some good insurance would be to have them all balanced (I also may have pressure washed a weight or two off.)

After prepping the wheels with rubbing alcohol I sprayed on 3 coats of Anthracite Grey and let that dry. Next was 3 coats of Glossifier. I watched a YouTube video by Fonzie at Dipyourcar.com to get it better this time and, I must say, his "wet coat" technique makes the wheels come out perfect and shiny. Looking at them you would never know that it was $70 worth of rubber coating on them.

I did something similar with my track wheels

One thing to note, you have to get them balanced before you coat the barrals as I would not think that weights would be very secure on Plasti-dip.

I ended up removing the coating on the barrel as I it became PITA to recoat them every time I change tires or get the flipped on the wheels

Also, if you do many (at least 5) coats it is more likely to peel off. Also there is a Dip remover...just spray on and hose off.

Just took a good look at your picture of the car on jack stands

Are you actually supporting the car by the rotor hubs ??

Is that bad? Isn't the car supported by the rotor hubs when the wheels are on?

I had them balanced before I coated them because I figured if the shop had a chance to F@#$ up the finish, they would.

well, yes it is connected throughout the wheel and tire. So structurally not a issue other than the load is distributed over the entire rotor/hum, not just 1 spot. I don't know if that is problematic or not.

My concern would be the stability of a jack stand on a round larger diameter surface that is slightly angled as well.

Why not put them at the actual jacking points??

The jack was occupying the actual jacking points when I was placing the stands.

This was the first thing I noticed, since I put my car on stands the other day. The hubs are tapered, so there isn't much flat surface for them to sit on.

Plus, without the wheel bolts on, the rotor is not actually part of the car. The caliper is holding it in, but why take the chance.

that's a good point on the lug bolts.

The rotor is held in place by a small screw (assuming it is even there), not the caliper and it is supported by the hub, bit IMHO not secure enough for me. I suppose you could tighten in the lug bolts, but still......
