Boxster S Muffler on a 2.5L?

Like the title says... I'm looking to change out my 98' 2.5L muffler and don't want to deal with the dreaded drone of an after-market one. I heard a 03/04' Boxster S muffler will work, but I'll need to get the proper mounting bracket. Is this true, can a later model muffler be swapped into an older car? If so, would the bracket just be an 03' or is it something different...

Yes you can use a S muffler on a 98 base, I do. You either have to modify the S muffler bracket a little or get the correct bracket. Woody sells the correct bracket for a fair price.

FYI I just did this in the last 24 hours. Advice......
1) the s muffler will fit
2) the mounting bracket on the trans is needed
3) the 'U' bends that came with my s muffler were different than what was on my 2.5 tho both were the exact same diameter.
4) remove all compression fittings
5) mid pipes were unbolted on mine to allow maneuverability
6)penetrating fluid is your friend
7) the 00-02 tips are different from the 03/04 tips
8) the 03/04 tips will not fit a 97-02 real bumper.
9) 2000-02 tips look odd on an 03/04 bumper.

Really? I thought the 03' tips would work? I just found a thread on here and someone with a 98' swapped to an 03'. Otherwise, the early cars (97-99) would only be able to work with 2000-02 mufflers, correct? I read the 03' S chamber was redesigned.

The muffler cut out on the 97-02 bumper is almost non existent
The muffler cut out on the 03-04 bumper is quite a bit larger.

The tips on an 03-04 are larger and I personally don't think they'd fit

I have 2003-04 bumpers on my car and went with an 02 bumper. The gap is quite significant. I'll get you some pics if u wanna see what I mean

Which bracket is needed? Is it the full bar that goes across the muffler or is it the plastic piece attached to the trans?

Best use is the search function. This was my install, everything is there, and yes the 03' 04' tip fits the 98 base rear just fine. Pics tell all.

Thanks! I actually came across your build last night. Good to know. Time to find an 03/04'
