Door hinge bolt loose...
The bolt in the middle of the attached picture is slightly loose, allowing the door retainer thingie (I'm sure it has a proper name...) to shift a little.
It's a non-hex bolt... what tool do I need to tighten it? I don't feel like driving 30 miles to the dealer for this. It actually makes a few loud "CLACK"ing noises when opening and closing the door... Anyone else had this happen? Thanks! |
I don't have my Boxster right now and the photo is a little fuzzy but it looks like the bolt have a Torx head. If nobody chimes in, I'll check it when I get home.

bolt close uo
sorry, was my cellphone camera... here's a close-up
BTW, it's a 2005 987 |
Hi,
The door retainer thingie is called the Door Brake . The Bolt is a T-20 Torx Bolt and has a Torque Value of 23NM or 17 ftlbs.. Hope this helps... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
Got home and checked it out. From your close-up picture, it looks like yours is a Torx head. Just fit checked my door bolt and it's a T40 Torx. Torx bits are available at most hardware store nowadays for not so much money. It helps to have a set of them in case something else comes loose on the Box. Once tightened, I hope it takes care of the clunking sound.
P.S. Hmm. Just saw Jim's post. Double checked driver and passenger side and mine are definitely T40. Might be a 986/987 difference. Better reason to pick up a set of Torx bits! |
It looks more like a 12 point drive to me..... not a torx. You should be able to buy the tool almost anywhere or better yet just stop by the dealer and ask them to tighten it up for you.

Hi, Thanks for pointing it out, it is a T40 Torx on the 987, but the Torque Value is the same... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
Thanks!
Thanks!
I'll buy you a beer if you're ever in NC  |
Upon further review, I believe that Sir.Rhosis is correct: 12 point (triple square). Though, I've checked it out with a T40 and a torque bit driver (I didn't even know I had one. I owe you a beer for helping me find it  ) 17 ft-lb isn't very much torque and a T40 will do in a pinch. However, perhaps it is more prudent to acquire the right bit for the job.

Seen that one before.

fixed
Went to the dealer to have it fixed, as I needed to be around there anyway. Noise is gone now as well.
:D |
Same issue on my Passenger side door. probably stop by autozone to barrow there 12 point screw driver.
