Side vent conundrum

A while back I desnorkeled. But I had trouble getting the side grill re-installed correctly. I see the clips attached to the grill housing, and I see the slots on the perimeter of the opening, but it appears that the clips need to slide into the slots from the interior of the opening. Which seems impossible..

So now it's being held in there only by the one screw at the top of the grill.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Garage
I had 3 broken vanes on my 03 drivers side vent when I got it and picked up a used pair on line. I didn't touch the pass. side only the drivers side but once lined up using a light to see where it all is going and into what it stopped going in. Then I tapped it with my hand a bit to sort of PUSH IT IN and it all fell back into place nicely. It has some foam on it for a tighter fit and It needed a bit of help to get it back in.
