To and from work my drive includes the PCH between Santa Monica and Mailbu and either Malibu Canyon Rd or Topaga Canyon Rd, all of which are roads traveled by some very wealthy people. As far as I can remember, seeing how I wasn't really counting, this morning I saw a least six 986's and two 987's, two 997's, one 996, one Ferrari 348, one Bentley Continental, one Hummer H2, mybe three Hummer H3's, one new M5, one E55, one CLS55, a couple SLK's and... well, anyhow, you get the picture and I'm to tired to think any more.
Maybe what I might do one day is try and take a picture, either with my camera or my phone, of all the "exotic" cars I see in one day. Then again that could be dangerous... driving and taking pictures.

5- 10 a day here in Atlanta...
Still only 1 987 every 2nd or 3rd day though...seems the production and sales volumes are significantly lower than the 986 models.
About half have the top down, at least this time of the year.

I'm in orange county. Everyday while I commute to work I see 1 parked near my office. So far, I've seen 2 on the freeway; we'll usually end up cruising together until I exit the offramp. Also, a couple 911's on the freeway so far. I've only seen 2 Caymans, one of which where the driver and I waved at each other in respect to each others interest in such a fine looking car.

I live in central VA, and there are 2-3 other Boxes that I see fairly regularly; a burgundy one a silver one and a blue one like mine. They usually have their tops up. I see more Cayennes than Boxes but this is SUV heaven around here.
My car spends 95% of the time with its top down, and I am forever wondering why anyone would pay the extra money for a convertible and never use it? I mean, really, 75 degrees, no humidity and not a cloud in the sky, and you see people drive by with their tops up and windows down.
The only other make I see that have their tops down on a regular basis are the S2000's. Even Miata owners tend to leave their tops up around here.

Well, I understand when people have their tops up. Perhaps they have really fair skin and don't want a burn or tan. Perhaps they need their hair to not be mussed up when they get to their destination, etc.
I feel bad for the people for whom the "novelty" of a convertible has worn off, and they end up never putting the top down. That's my sister with her Miata. Bummer.

Around here I see more 996 and 997's than Boxsters.. but there are tone of Porsches in general in the NYC/North NJ area.

...my husband and I are forever wondering why anyone would pay the extra money for a convertible and never use it?
That's why they came out with the Cayman, so now you can pay extra for a fixed roof.
I feel bad for the people for whom the "novelty" of a convertible has worn off, and they end up never putting the top down.
I think you hit the nail on the head there. Driving a cvt can be a brutal assault on the senses, especially without a wind-deflector. What looks fun for someone else may not be what these people bargained for.
In the "most likely to drive with the top down" category, I'm going to go with Chrysler Sebring owners (although I think that availability in rental-car fleets contributes to this). In the "least likely category" I'm going to say Merc CLK convertible owners.

I've never seen a boxster in the Boston financial district but I have seen 1 on the freeway going home on occasion, but that's about it.
I've seen more 911's than boxster.

Here in Upstate NY (Rochester) I see soooooo many Cayennes on the road. Boxsters and 911's are relatively unique. Swear I see the same 4 of each at least once a week.
Corvette C5's all over the place... and C6's are startting to become more prevalent.
Actually saw my first Lotus Elise as it passed me on the highway at about 100 mph. Seriously low and tiny. Almost kit car like... but cool.

I am actually quite surprised, but I see quite a few here in Cary, NC. Probably at least 1 Boxster a day and 3 996/997s per week. And there are a couple of Turbo S Cabs in the area too.
I guess it helps that we have a Porsche dealership in town too.
